PR: Acquiring responsibility for the molding compound business of PLEXIGLAS® and PLEXALLOY® from Degussa Japan

18.05.2006

Effective January 2006, Daicel-Degussa has taken over the molding compound business of PMMA resins, PLEXIGLAS® and PLEXALLOY® from Degussa Japan and has also begun marketing activities in the Japanese Market.

PLEXIGLAS®, invented by Dr. Otto Röhm in 1933, is a world-renowned polymethyl-methacrylate that has been manufactured and sold for 73 years by Röhm GmbH & Co. KG, a member of the Degussa Group. Röhm GmbH & Co. KG, founded in 1907, is a world-leading methacrylate manufacturer, producing and marketing a range of methacrylate products from monomers and molding compounds to extruded and cast semifinished sheet products. In the Japanese market, Röhm¡Çs products were handled by Degussa Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of Degussa AG, and beginning January 2006, Daicel-Degussa took over its molding compound business.

By acquiring this business, we are making our first entrance into the PMMA molding compound business. We have been focusing on the polyamide resin business more than 35 years and are dedicated to the development of plastic applications. Daicel-Degussa is confident that the accumulated technologies, market development capabilities and marketing channels will be greatly utilized to establish a strong position in this new market. We look forward to significant growth in the PMMA market and are targeting mid-term sales achievement of 1 billion JPY.

Daicel-Degussa provides several series of PLEXIGLAS® and PLEXALLOY® molding compounds, each offering a distinctive set of characteristics.

1) PLEXIGLAS® Standard Molding Compound
Depending on the grade, this series consists of molding compounds offering a superior balance of flowability during injection molding or higher heat deflection temperature for structural stability of the end product. Extrusion grades also offer optimal processing conditions for various thicknesses and shapes. Primary applications include automotive rearlight covers, lighting fixtures, nameplates, lenses and household appliances as well as extruded sheets and profiles.

2)PLEXIGLAS® zk Molding Compounds (Impact-Modified)
The products of this series offer high impact strength and are suitable for extruding and coextruding profiles and sheets, as well as for injection molding. Examples of typical applications are lighting covers, display applications, writing utensils, sanitary ware and household appliances.

3)PLEXIGLAS® hw Molding Compounds
This easy-to-mold polymer has a Vicat softening temperature of approximately 120¡ë C and is particularly suited for injection-molding technical parts in applications subjected to high thermal stress.

4)PLEXIGLAS® df Molding Compounds (Light-Diffusing)
PLEXIGLAS® diffuser molding compounds make it possible to obtain such design effects as velvety surfaces, paired with diffuse light distribution and high transmission. These optical properties are achieved by embedding spherical polymer particles of a different refractive index in the corresponding PMMA molding compound. Since each of these diffuser beads has a different refractive index than the matrix, they change the propagation of light. Typical applications include P-O-P displays, lighting, advertising and decorative items.

5)PLEXIGLAS® Molding Compounds Optical Quality
On request, the standard molding compound PLEXIGLAS® 7N is supplied in ¡Ètested optical quality¡É

6)PLEXALLOY® NTA Series
PLEXALLOY® NTA molding compounds are mainly used for non-transparent automotive applications, such as pillar posts, spoilers and mirror housings. Due to their high brilliance, high-gloss surfaces (Class A) can be obtained. Based on a clear material, the NTA Series offers Class A surface gloss characterized by a deep sheen on the molded surface.

As explained above, all PLEXIGLAS® and PLEXALLOY® grades exhibit excellent physical properties in various characteristics categories. We are confident that these products will fully satisfy your diverse requirements.
