Evonik Degussa is the worlds largest producer of polyamide 12 (PA 12, Nylon 12). In doing so we benefit from our back-integrated production: Starting from butadiene, High Performance Polymers manufactures laurolactam, the monomer for polyamide 12, in a multi-step process.
The properties of semi-crystalline polyamides are determined by the concentration of amide groups in the macromolecules. Polyamide 12 has the lowest amide group concentration of all commercially available polyamides thereby substantially promoting its characteristics:
- lowest moisture absorption: Parts show largest dimensional stability under conditions of changing humidity.
- exceptional impact and notched impact strength, even at temperatures well below the freezing point
- good to excellent resistance against greases, oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, various solvents, salt solutions and other chemicals
- exceptional resistance to stress cracking, including metal parts encapsulated by injection molding or embedded
- excellent abrasion resistance
- low coefficient of sliding friction, in dry running against steel, polybutylene terephthalate, polyacetal, and other materials
- noise and vibration damping properties
- superb fatigue resistance under high frequency cyclical loading condition
- high processability
Thanks of these characteristics applications of DAIAMID, VESTAMID® L include challenging tubing systems as fuel lines, wire insulations in the cable industry, catheter manufacturing in the medical technology, precision components for gears and valve housings in the machinery and engineering.
